Nestlé launches plant-based sausages

FMCG giant Nestlé SA has expanded its range of plant-based meat products with a pea protein-based sausage, which will launch in the US, and a soy-based version which will hit Europe this spring.

The FMCG giant already has a range of meat alternatives in these markets including nuggets and schnitzels, and last year introduced its ‘cook from raw’ plant-based burger in Australia.

“The burger was what you would call in the tech industry the killer app — it got the whole plant-based trend running. But it’s not enough to just have a burger,” chief executive officer Mark Schneider said.

Harvest Gourmet Incredible Burger is made with soy and wheat protein and natural plant extracts, beetroot, carrots and capsicum, with coconut oil.

Nestlé is also developing plant-based tuna which could be used as pizza toppings, sushi or served as a patty.

“There’s an overall opportunity in both in-home and out-of-home, and we’re committed to playing ball. In this space, we play to win,” Schneider said.

The food company has established a partnership with McDonald’s in Germany to capitalise on the growing demand among consumers for plant-based foods.
