Sustainable Seafood Day

fortheseaThe Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is calling on consumers to look for the MSC ecolabel and host their own sustainable seafood lunch or dinner as part of Sustainable Seafood Day  today.

MSC country manager, Patrick Caleo, says MSC’s ecolabel was introduced to give consumers a reliable stamp of sustainability to look for when shopping for seafood.

“If you love the ocean, look for the label – MSC ecolabel is a trusted mark of sustainability. You’ll find it on tinned and frozen seafood in supermarkets and at your local restaurant. It is an international standard, so you can be sure of sustainability, no matter where the seafood comes from. If you can’t see it, we encourage you to ask,” Caleo said.

MSC’s standard for sustainable fishing is based on three core principles including healthy populations of target stock, reduced impact on the marine ecosystem (including bycatch and habitat impact) and, the effective management processes of the fishery.

Consumerse can register for a free #ForTheSea Hosting Pack or download an e-pack by visiting www.msc.org/forthesea .

The pack includes a Sustainable Seafood Day eco-shopping bag, sustainable seafood recipe ideas, and paper decorations with scientific facts about sustainable fishing all printed on FCS certified sustainable paper

“We have more than 300 fisheries worldwide engaged in the MSC program. This includes very small artisanal fisheries as well as large commercial fisheries. More than 500 environmental improvements have been identified in fisheries entering the program,” said Caleo.
