Seafood sales to soar at Easter

1433766_35891352Retailers at Sydney Fish Market expect to sell more than 370 tonnes of seafood during the Easter long weekend, including more than 40 tonnes of prawns and 240,000 oysters.

Sydney Fish Market GM, Bryan Skepper, said Good Friday is the market’s single biggest trading day of the year.

“People come to Sydney Fish Market looking for the freshest and best seafood to mark Good Friday, and to enjoy time with family and friends over the extended holiday break,” Skepper  said.

More than 50,000 people are expected to visit Sydney Fish Market on Good Friday to purchase for customary Christian menus and festive get togethers over the long weekend.

Sydney Fish Market supply manager, Gus Dannoun, said the fishers who supply Sydney Fish Market will be busy making sure there are ample supplies of fresh fish, prawns, calamari, and crabs on hand.

“A favourite treat for family and friends at Easter is prawns. Heavy rain in the north in recent weeks means sweet tasting prawns are in plentiful supply, they’re easy to prepare and popular as starters, in salads, or on the barbie,” Dannoun said.

“With a four day long weekend to refine their skills, we hope shoppers will be adventurous and try something new in the kitchen. If seafood lovers have never cooked a whole fish, now’s the time to try. First-timers might want to try a baked Snapper and work their way up to a deep fried Blue Warehou. There will be plenty of whole fish and fillets on offer.Calamari is a great low cost option to make your seafood meal stretch a little further. It can be tossed in a salad or served with wilted or stir-fried vegetables.

“One thing’s for sure, whatever seafood you choose it will be delicious. We encourage our shoppers to make good use of the four day weekend and the free recipes on our website to fine tune their seafood cooking skills,” Dannoun said.

Sydney Fish Market will be open for extended trading on Good Friday, April 3 2015 from 5am to 5pm on, and normal trading hours 7am to 4pm on April 4 to 6 2015.
