Modest spending tipped for April figures out Thursday are expected to show that the recovery in consumer spending has continued, albeit at a modest rate.

Retail sales are forecast to have risen 0.3 per cent in April, after lifting 0.3 per cent in March.

“We look for some further incremental growth, if at a quite modest rate,” National Australia Bank economists said.

“In April, employment was virtually steady, consumer sentiment was a little tentative in the lead up to the budget, and there was little change in retail industry business conditions.”
