AFL v NRL Grand Final: The food and drink edition

Screen Shot 2015-10-01 at 9.23.08 AMMobile payments app, Clipp, has revealed what AFL and NRL fans will be likely to eat and drink on Grand Final Day based on data from last’s AFL and NRL Grand Final Days from 600 venues across Australia.

With this year’s AFL Grand Final on Saturday October 3, followed by the NRL Grand Final the very next day on October 4, the hospitality industry is bracing itself for back to back days of hundreds of cheering fans across both footy codes.

Last year, while the Sydney Swans and Hawks battled it out in the AFL Grand Final, the three most popular beers AFL fans were ordering at venues countrywide were Carlton Draught, VB, and Tooheys New.

Smirnoff Vodka, Johnny Walker, and Gin made the cut as the top three spirits, while a typical AFL fan’s food of choice was either pizza, burgers, or wedges.

NRL fans who were watching the Rabbitohs dream run between the Bulldogs, chose XXXX as their favourite beer, followed by Carlton Draught & VB. Interestingly, much like their AFL counterparts, the go to spirits for NRL fans were Smirnoff Vodka and Johnny Walker, but chose Bundaberg Rum over Gin. When it comes to food, NRL fans choose the pub staples burgers, schnitzel and chips when peckish.

Greg Taylor, Clipp’s co-founder said that 2015 was the year where craft beer would reign supreme.

“What we’re predicting this year is both AFL and NRL fans will choose craft beer over the major brewers. Craft beer has seen a massive rise in popularity, largely in part to it being available in local pubs, bars and many restaurants as well.

“2014 was Stone & Wood’s year in terms of the Grand Final beer choice, but this year, it looks like Young Henry’s will be crowned champion. When it comes to food, we’re expecting Sliders to be the favourite among punters right across Australia,” Taylor said.
