Aldi Edgecliff has had its liquor licence suspended after selling alcohol to a minor.
As a result the supermarket will not be allowed to sell any alcohol from today until Friday (April 12-14 2016).
On September 18 2015, the police saw a juvenile holding Aldi shopping bags and exchanging money with a group of young males.
The shopping bags were inspected and four six packs of beer found. The minor told the police that two of the six packs were taken from one of the young persons’ homes and the other two bought from the Aldi supermarket.
The minor said a supermarket cashier asked him to produce ID but he said he had lost his wallet. Instead the minor showed a photograph of a fraudulent driver’s licence on his mobile phone which featured a superimposed image of himself, and was then allowed to purchase the alcohol.
When questioned, the cashier said he was unaware that scanned IDs were not acceptable.
In response to the proposed sanction, Aldi had advised that its staff be trained to check the IDs of all persons who appear to be under 25 and measures taken since the incident. The cashier who sold the alcohol had since undertaken refresher RSA training.
Under the Minors Sanctions Scheme, escalating penalties apply for selling alcohol to under 18s including liquor licence suspensions, cancellations and licensee disqualifications.
