ACCC to begin court action against Heinz

Food giant Heinz will defend allegations from Australia’s consumer watchdog over a sugary snack that was marketed for toddlers.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will begin a hearing in the Federal Court in Adelaide on Monday alleging H.J. Heinz Company Australia Ltd in relation to the promotion of a product called Shredz which it alleges the company falsely marketed as healthy options for young children.

The company has strenuously denied the ACCC allegations and said it complied with Australian labelling and food laws.

While the product is no longer on the market, the Shredz range included three varieties – peach apple and veg, berries apple and veg, and strawberry and apple with chia seeds – and they were predominantly made from fruit juice concentrate and pastes.

But the ACCC alleges the products contained over 60 per cent sugar.
