Dove apologises for ‘racist’ Facebook ad

Dove Racist AdLondon global soap brand Dove has apologised for a Facebook ad that was criticised as racist because it depicts a black woman apparently changing into a white woman after using a Dove product.

“An image we recently posted on Facebook missed the mark in representing women of colour thoughtfully,” Dove said on Twitter on Saturday. “We deeply regret the offence it caused.”

It is not clear how widely the image was circulated, or which markets were targeted by the brand owned by the Dutch-British multinational consumer goods company Unilever.

A US make-up artist had shared the image on Facebook on Friday after she said it appeared in her Facebook feed. Some Twitter users were unimpressed with Dove‘s response.

“Is that supposed to be an apology?” asked one South African Twitter user. “We actually don’t need your apology, as we move on to a better brand that’s not RACIST…!!! Bye.”

“In all seriousness, how does a company as big as Dove make a ‘mistake’ like this?” wrote another Twitter user from New York.
