Fish farm limits cut at Tasmanian harbour

salmon2Tasmania’s environmental watchdog has slashed the maximum amount of salmon and trout allowed to be farmed in Macquarie Harbour, revealing more than a million fish died there in half a year.

The picturesque harbour on the state’s west coast has for years suffered environmental damage and mass fish deaths due to overstocking.

The Environment Protection Authority on Tuesday cut the harbour’s fish stock limit from 12,000 tonnes to 9500 tonnes for the next two years.

Director Wes Ford told ABC radio that 1.35 million fish died due to an endemic virus over a six month period from October last year.
