US supermarket Kroger has unveiled plans to introduce a substantial food offering to 13 Walgreens stores across the US in early 2019.
The new strategy, known as Kroger Express, will see the addition of 2,300 items to the drugstore including meal kits, dairy, meat, produce and frozen food.
The first Kroger Express will launch in Kentucky early in the new year.
“We’re pleased to continue working together to explore new concepts that expand product selection to provide a better shopping experience and greater value for our customers,” Richard Ashworth, Walgreens president of operations told Yahoo.
Walgreen’s rival CVS Health has also expanded its offerings to include frozen food and fresh groceries. The drugstores are aiming to become one-stop shopping destinations, to compete with online retail giant Amazon, which has amps up its food offerings online and through its partnership with Whole Foods.
