German supermarket giant Aldi has strengthened its position as one of the UK’s highest paying supermarkets after announcing increases in hourly pay rates for store workers this week.
Store assistants will be paid minimum hourly rates of £9.10 nationally rising to £10.41 after three years. They previously earned £8.85 according to the Daily Mail.
The new rates are above the voluntary “real” living wage’ rate of £9 an hour nationally.
The supermarket has also announced plans to open seven new stores in Ireland in 2019 and will create 500 jobs, according to the Irish Examiner.
It will introduce a new minimum rate of pay of €11.90 an hour, which matches the living wage rate in Ireland.
The new rate will make Aldi the first grocery retailer in the country to introduce the hourly pay figure as recommended by The Living Wage Technical Group.
