Coles catapults online grocery offering with eBay partnership
Supermarket giant Coles is making its presence felt in online grocery, announcing a partnership with eBay this Wednesday morning to bring more than 4000 of its products to the popular shopping site.
Coles perishable and non-perishable goods will be made available to the e-commerce giant’s 11 million monthly users, with items including fresh fruit and vegetables, ready meals, select pre-packaged fresh food and pantry items.
Personal care and household items will also be available on the site, including baby care, dental and pet food, with all items at the same prices found in-store.
With a delivery time frame of 2-4 days, ready-to-eat items, like deli roast chicken currently offered through Uber Eats, are not currently included in the range.
Customers will however be glad to hear that the service offers delivery even when no-one is home.
While only 3 per cent of Australians currently choose to shop online, a newly-independent Coles is getting in ahead of the curve.
The supermarket giant will be hoping this new offering can challenge Amazon Australia, which expanded its range to include pantry items last October.
Coles is doing its best to encourage consumers to try out the service, with the first 5,000 shoppers to receive a 25 per cent discount on their first order.
“We are always looking for ways to make life easier for our customers,” Coles Online chief executive, Alister Jordan said.
“By partnering with eBay, we are providing our customers another convenient way to access our products and have them delivered straight to their door.”
As with many new online ventures, however, the service is limited to metro Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, meaning customers in rural areas don’t see the benefit just yet.
“Coles is one of Australia’s oldest and most trusted brands, so we’re excited to welcome them to eBay as they broaden their online channels,” Tim MacKinnon, managing director of eBay Australia and New Zealand said.
“Both eBay and Coles share the vision of providing convenience, range and value to our customers and together we can make it even easier for Aussies to meet all their shopping needs in one place.”
The e-commerce giant is using the opportunity to boost its eBay Plus subscriptions by promising members free delivery on orders of $49 and over and double flybuys points on all orders.
