P&G calls for more progress on gender equality

FMCG giant Procter & Gamble (P&G) hosted the second annual Asia Pacific #WeSeeEqual Summit in Singapore on Friday, and called on leaders to impact change and accelerate progress for gender equality.

Australia’s former first woman prime minister Julia Gillard, who was in attendance said she was honoured to support the message of gender equality.

“I am very pleased and honoured to support the gender equality commitment by P&G APAC to strengthen success for women in business and life. I believe the WeSeeEqual movement is a force for change and progress towards gender equity and stronger communities,” Gillard said during the summit.

The #WeSeeEqual discussion highlighted “myths” around women’s leadership skills and representation of women in leadership roles; science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Leaders also called for a new playbook that expounds on what leadership is through both women and men working in companies.

“Gender equality goes beyond targets, quotas and sponsorship of women’s development programs. We need new interventions to ‘Fix the System’ and include men as inclusive and equality-minded leaders. The focus is on workplaces where men champion equality together with women. When more corporations and organisations commit to championing equality, then we will see equal,” Magesvaran Suranjan, P&G President, APAC and IMEA, Suranjan said at the opening of the event.

The summit celebrated WEConnect International Women Entrepreneurs Development Program which is part of the company’s long-term commitment to support women’s economic empowerment by promoting a more diverse supply network.
