Foodland supermarkets first to accept bring-your-own containers in SA

Foodland’s Pasadena and Frewville supermarkets have become the first in South Australia to accept bring-your-own containers to help reduce the use of single-use plastics. The grocery completed a successful trial of Pack and Go in August in conjunction with KESAB environmental solutions and Décor.

Pack and Go is unique in that it allows customers to pre-purchase discounted approved containers in-store, which are commercially cleaned, reused and swapped by the stores on a one-for-one basis with food purchases.

The containers are dishwasher, microwave and freezer safe, and comply with Food Standards Australia New Zealand guidelines. The stores will accept containers for bulk foods, salads, cheeses, deli meats, spices, olives, antipasti, raw meats and other food items.

“Customers at our stores have been quick to embrace the scheme during the trial with environmental responsibility important to them,” Foodland’s commercial retail group director Spero Chapley said.

“The launch of Pack and Go is part of our overall approach to waste management and recycling which working closely with KESAB aims to reduce our landfill by 70 per cent over the next 12 months.”

Foodlands has also reintroduced paper bags at the checkout and is working with suppliers to get rid of plastics used in product packaging, particular fresh fruit and vegetables.
