Brownes Dairy brings back the milkman

Australia’s oldest dairy business Brownes Dairy is going back to basics, with the return of its Milko delivery service.

With many households self isolating due to spread of COVID-19, the Milko is offering home delivery of household essentials such as milk, Chill drinks, yoghurt and juice for free when customers spend a minimum of A$10.

“Staying at home is becoming a necessity and we know that a lot of families have been struggling to get even their basic groceries so it is now more important than ever for communities to support each other,” said Brownes spokesperson Natalie Sarich-Dayton.

The system has been given a modern twist, with consumers now able to order online and have products delivered the next day.

The service launched on Thursday and has already reached capacity with unprecedented demand from consumers.

“We have been overwhelmed by the response from all of you in the last 24 hours. Unfortunately we’ve exceeded our capacity for deliveries this week. Please stay tuned and we will update you as soon as we can,” a note on the company’s website read.

Sarich-Dayton said it’s really struck a chord of nostalgia amongst the people of Perth.

“[They] fondly remember getting their milk delivered to their doorstep, which was decades ago. There’s also a lot of relief. Milk is one of those essential items that can cause stress in the household when you run out,” she said.

Brownes has a vendor network of deliverers, mostly run by small family businesses. All drivers will wear masks and gloves as they deliver the milk to households.

“They will text the household to say they are coming – people can put out their laundry basket at the front of the house and the vendor will drop off the milk into the laundry basket,” said Sarich-Dayton.

“Life isn’t normal right now, for a lot of people, everything is upside down, and if we can play a role in giving back that one little bit of normalcy like having milk for your morning cup of tea or milk to go on the cereal, then we wanted to be able to do that.”
