Multinational food and drink conglomerate Nestle has launched a plant-based alternative to tuna.

While Nestle already markets numerous plant-based meat items, the new product is the brand’s first plant-based seafood alternative, with a flaky texture and a flavour that closely matches real tuna. It contains six ingredients, including pea protein, known as one of the most nutritious and environmentally friendly plant foods.

The product was developed over nine months of research and testing.

“Sustainably produced plant-based seafood alternatives can help to reduce overfishing and to protect the biodiversity of our oceans,” said Nestle’s chief technology officer Stefan Palzer. “Our plant-based tuna alternative is delicious, nutritious and high in protein.”

He said Nestle has other plant-based fish and shellfish alternatives under development already.

Nestle’s product will initially be launched under the Garden Gourmet brand in Switzerland.

According to Nestle Switzerland market head Eugenio Simioni, the product is “another example of the innovation strength of Nestle in Switzerland, and the exceptional capabilities and expertise we have in this country in the area of food and nutrition.”
