IGA poll shows Aussies plan to buy local this Christmas

Half of the Aussie grocery shoppers who participated in an IGA poll say they plan to buy local this Christmas, supporting businesses close to home after a tough year.

Other results from the supermarket brand’s ‘Christmas Aisle Index’ report include that while 27 per cent of Australians will spend less on gifts, 24 per cent on going out and 21 per cent on travel, just 7 per cent plan to cut spending on groceries and liquor.

Joseph Romeo, IGA retailer and chair of the IGA National Retailer Council said local, family-owned businesses like his lie at the heart of communities across Australia. “It is fantastic to see how Aussies, now more than ever, are choosing to shop locally, supporting the businesses, and suppliers that have supported them in what has been an unprecedented year.”

Some 56 per cent of respondents say they plan to conduct multiple shops in the lead up to Christmas, buying things as they are needed, with just 25 per cent planning one big shop.

Romeo said that more than 3.8 million Australians plan on supporting the local economy by spreading their Christmas grocery shopping across a few local, independent grocers and farmers markets as opposed to one big shop at the big chains.

The research also found that about one in three Aussies plan smaller, more intimate celebrations with friends and family in the lead up to Christmas Day.
