One Beer helps Australians monitor their standard drinks

Brewer One Classic Lager has launched a 500ml can of beer equivalent to one standard drink – to help Australians calculate their alcohol consumption more easily.

According to market research agency Ipsos, 40 per cent of Australians do not know what a standard drink is while 56 per cent cannot count how many standard drinks they consume on an occasion. A standard drink is a unit measure for liquor with a beer between 0.7 and 1.5 standard drinks per serve.

“It is exactly 12.5mL or 10g of pure alcohol (no matter what beverage) and takes the average person about one hour for the body to metabolise that amount of alcohol out of their bloodstream,” says preventative health expert Dr Ross Walker.

He says it is confusing for consumers when having one to two drinks in one sitting can account for between two and four standard drinks.

One spokesperson Mark Truelson says the company knows Australian drinkers are starting to heed the health and wellness messages, with 72 per cent of Aussies saying they are drinking under the recommended amount of alcohol in a week.

“For those people in particular, One helps them keep track of their drinks while also watching their calorie intake,” he said.

One Classic Lager is the first brand launched by UniBev-BDV, a company established to create and market contemporary and innovative brands and products across alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

The product has no additives or preservatives and has 25 per cent fewer calories than other beers.

One Classic Lager is sold at BWS and Dan Murphy’s stores nationwide.
