Ferrero recalls some Kinder products in Australia, NZ ‘as a precaution’

(Source: Supplied)

Ferrero’s worsening food recall crisis has stretched to Australia and New Zealand where the multinational confectionery company has withdrawn batches of products as ‘a precautionary measure’.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) along with the European Food Safety Authority is now investigating 134 confirmed cases of salmonella in nine countries.

“The outbreak is characterised by an unusually high proportion of children being hospitalised, some with severe clinical symptoms such as bloody diarrhoea,” said the health agency.

The seasonal products are manufactured in Belgium and may contain possible links to salmonella which is caused by a bacteria that can cause pain and upset the stomach.

Following the scare, the Italian confectionery brand has recalled batches of its Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs and other products from Spanish markets on Wednesday. Similar moves were seen in the UK which recorded the highest number of confirmed cases at 63 followed by Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Sweden, the Netherlands and Norway.

In Australia and New Zealand, the brand has recalled its Kinder Surprise Easter Basket and Kinder Mini Eggs Hazelnut (100gm) and Kinder Surprise Maxi (100g) products from the market. It says it is working closely with retailers as well as NSW Food Authority to trace and eliminate products from the market.

The Kinder Surprise Easter Basket comes wrapped in yellow foil paper with Best Before Dates between October 7 and November 20 this year.

The Kinder Mini Eggs Hazelnut and Kinder Surprise Maxi products both in 100g have Best Before Dates between August 23 and September 13 this year.

The Kinder Surprise 20g, which are manufactured in Italy and sold in Australia, are not affected.

Consumers are advised to hold on to the products and call the brand’s customer care services for further action immediately.
