Coles recognises First Nations talent through new program

Coles has partnered with the Mushroom Group and its creative agency to help young and aspiring Indigenous musicians gain experience and mentorship.

The program will feature participants from around the country across six genres including pop, rap and electro. Participants include Jay Gonsalves (Vic), Angus (Aya J) (Qld), Bumpy (Vic), Dameeeela (NSW), Hartcole (WA), Tyler (The Terrifying Lows) (Vic), Hylander (NSW) and Glves (Qld).

This music move is an extension of the retailer’s existing First Nation’s Pathway Program – currently focused on sport – and is designed and facilitated by Mushroom Creative House. The program will offer Indigenous talent an ‘immersive educational experience of the music industry’ and future employment opportunities.

An intensive four-day music masterclass is included, with industry experts including masterclass facilitator and cultural advisor Scott Darlow who will share insights into the music industry. Mentors will work with the artists throughout the year in one-on-one sessions.

Mushroom Group chief Matt Gudinski said the partnership with Coles will nurture and develop the next wave of many talented First Nations artists.

“Mushroom has been a long-time champion of First Nations artists, representing icons such as Archie Roach and Yothu Yindi. Through this partnership, together we’ve established a platform that’s invaluable for evolving up and coming creatives.”

Coles’ CMO Lisa Ronson said the business will support the venture by sharing the stories and music of these talented musicians through the network’s Coles Radio and in-store magazines to raise awareness.

The Mushroom Creative House has also commissioned contemporary Aboriginal artist Rachael Sarra from Goreng Goreng Country, to design an artwork for use throughout the Program.
