Mitolo Family Farms shifts to paper bag packaging for fresh potatoes

Mitolo Family Farms shifts to paper bag packaging for fresh potatoes

Australian produce company Mitolo Family Farms has partnered with Coles and sustainable packaging solutions company Detmold Group to transition into more eco-friendly packaging for its fresh potatoes.

The new packaging will see its premium Gourmandine potatoes sold in paper bags instead of plastic – reducing plastic used in packaging by 64 per cent, or by 8.2 tonnes each year.

In addition, the new paper bag packaging, sold under the Detpak brand, is fully recyclable through kerbside collections.

Mitolo Family Farms MD Frank Mitolo said while the bag might sound like a simple solution, the company undertook “immense work” to ensure it would not compromise the quality of the potatoes.

“We had to consider everything from lux lighting levels in the supermarket to breathing holes that don’t tear, new sealing solutions, bag strength and more,” he explained.

“We know Australian consumers are increasingly looking for sustainable supply chains for the products they purchase, and we’re proud to be leading the way and partnering with Coles for a  product that so many families love to cook and share.”

Tom Lunn, Detmold Group GM of innovation and sustainability, added that the company applied propriety technology to deliver sustainable and efficient products for Coles, Mitolo, and the end consumer.

“We’re very pleased to have been able to draw on our in-house development capabilities to assist Mitolo Family Farms with their desire to transition their Gourmandine product away from plastic packaging,” said Lunn.

“Consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of making responsible choices when it comes to  choosing which brands to buy from, and packaging plays a significant part in those decisions.”

Mitolo Family Farm’s Gourmandine potatoes are exclusively available in Coles supermarkets nationwide.
