Suntory Spirits to use Green Aluminium for The Premium Malt cans

Suntory Spirits to use sustainable aluminium for The Premium Malt cans

Suntory Spirits – part of beverage giant Suntory Group – will use a more sustainable type of aluminium, Green Aluminum, for its limited-edition The Premium Malt cans, which will be available in stores across Japan beginning this month.

The Green Aluminum material was made in collaboration with Sumitomo Corporation, Sumisho Metalex Corporation, Kobe Steel, and Daiwa Can Company. It was produced via the “mass balance method” which reduces carbon emissions by 25 per cent compared to conventional aluminium cans.

Suntory’s chief sustainability officer, Masaaki Fujiwara, praised the collaborative efforts of the five companies in reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in the aluminium can supply chain.

“We will continue to work with all value chain members to promote various initiatives to reduce GHG emissions,” remarked Fujiwara.

As per Suntory’s Environmental Vision, the company aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the whole value chain by 2050. The company also aims to reduce its GHG emissions by half by 2030.

For PET bottles, Suntory established the “Suntory Group Plastic Policy” in 2019 to achieve a recycling-oriented and decarbonised society.

The beverage company said it will continue to reduce GHG emissions throughout its entire value chain by actively introducing environmentally friendly packaging materials and containers and installing more energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy.
