A North American winery wants to change the way wine is packaged and sold to reduce its environmental impact – by using aluminium bottles instead of glass.
Bogle Family Wine Collection has unveiled 750ml aluminium wine bottles that are lightweight, recyclable, and constructed in the shape of a traditional wine bottle.
Element[AL] Wines will be sold in 100 per cent recyclable aluminium bottles, featuring four varietals: Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Rose, and Pinot Noir. Each wine varietal is grown in sustainably managed vineyards in California’s premier growing areas.
“Element[AL] is more than just the launch of a new wine brand, it’s the beginning of a new way of thinking for the wine industry,” said Jody Bogle, VP of consumer relations at Bogle Family Wine Collection.
“We began by looking for ways to lightweight our existing glass bottles, and that led to a more radical approach that we feel consumers are ready to embrace.”
Element[AL] was formed after nearly three years of research and development. The company says that – unlike standard glass bottles – Element[AL]’s giftable bottle has no label and is dressed in a 360° deco pattern printed directly on the bottle with hand-drawn artwork unique to each variety.
Element[AL] also found from internal research that there is no perceived flavour difference between aluminium and glass bottles after conducting a blind tasting test of wines aged for one year in glass versus aluminium bottles.
