During these times of escalating industry upheaval, the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) works hard to put our members’ views and needs in front of the change-makers.
A vision for a thriving and trusted industry that sustains Australia
Founded in 1995, the AFGC’s mission is to be “the voice of the food and grocery supply industry” and a valued service provider. We collaborate with our members to develop policy positions and represent their views to the government, trading partners and stakeholders. We also provide a platform for collective action, providing information and insights to help navigate complex industry issues.
Innovation without compromise
Recent media attention focusing on the challenges faced by RedCycle – a significant contributor to the nation’s recycling ecosystem – left Australians concerned about the future of soft plastic collection. This exposed the demand for a longer-term, larger-scale program.
To this end, the AFGC and leading Australian food and grocery manufacturers developed a scheme for nationwide soft plastics recycling underpinned by kerbside collection. Last year, the first national trials commenced which will enable the supply chain to confidently invest in a soft plastics recycling scheme for the future.
The National Plastics Recycling Scheme (NPRS) project will make it easier for people to recycle soft plastics (like bread and cereal bags, frozen vegetable packets and plastic toilet paper wrap) at home, creating an advanced recycling industry in Australia by turning used soft plastics into new food-grade packaging.
Our members help us drive innovation and solutions for food, beverage and grocery manufacturers: If you’d like to be a part of this, now is the time to become a member and contribute to shaping a more sustainable future.
Industry recognition
The food and grocery supply industry takes fresh produce from Australian farmers and turns it into the iconic products we know and trust. Contributing more than $133 billion to the economy and employing more than 272,000 people, it offers goods geared to healthy lifestyles, advocates for sustainable environmental practices, and supports farmers and regional communities.
Our advocacy work ensures that political and policy decision-makers and key stakeholders recognise the scale of the contributions of the industry.
