One of Australia’s largest food rescue organisations, Second Bite, has launched its first ever “No Food Waste Challenges” which runs from 8 to 29 September.
The “No Food Waste Challenges” aims to raise funds for Second Bite’s operations, while raising awareness of household food waste in Australia. The initiative will see every $1 raised for SecondBite help provide up to five nutritious meals for Aussies struggling to make ends meet and remain healthy.
During the challenge, participants will be asked to reduce or eliminate their food waste, use up all their leftovers and are encouraged to initiate conversations with family, friends, and colleagues to all “do their bit” to support better environmental outcomes and save money.
KitchenHand.io, a tech start-up that is helping Australian households save time, effort, and money in the kitchen while avoiding discarded food, is supporting the event. It will be providing engagement material for the duration of the challenge and access to online tools to help the accomplish the goals of the challenge.
“According to research conducted by the federally funded Fight Food Waste CRC, Australian households discard almost $20 billion worth of food annually,” KitchenHand.io Founder, Kate McHugh, explained. “Generally, people don’t like to waste food, yet they’re unaware of how much they actually throw out on a daily basis OR how to use leftover food and ingredients effectively and cost-efficiently.
“Managing food in the household kitchen is one of a long list of tasks that people have to take care of,” McHugh added. “We provide tools to support them without having to think about it.”
According to SecondBite co-founder Simone Carson AM, over two million households in Australia have experienced severe food insecurity and on any given day, over half a million households are struggling to meet their food needs.
