Australian sustainable personal hygiene and cleaning goods brand Zero Co has announced it will close on April 30, after six years of cleaning up waste across Australia.

The company sold laundry detergents, cleaning liquids, shower products, and dishwashing powders in refillable dispensers, which customers could mail back for reuse.

The business’s introduction of its closed-loop model, through the launch of its ForeverFill paper refill packages and bottles last year, created issues for customers that Zero Co could not resolve.

Founder Mike Smith stated that the business was unable to find a pathway to achieve its goal of scaling up to a revenue of $100 million per year, 1 per cent of which would go towards cleaning up oceans.

Startup Daily reported that the business will be closing down while still solvent.

The company has served over 100,000 Australian homes with its products, made with 97 per cent less plastic.

The proceeds received through this initiative have been used to clean up over 45 million water bottles’ worth of garbage from the world’s oceans.

The company will hold a final sale of its products at a discounted rate of 50 per cent till April 30.

“To every single person that’s been part of this amazing journey and incredible mission, I say this: thank you,” said Smith.
