After eight years of planning, Scapegrace Distilling Co has opened its NZ$30 million ($27 million) distillery, the largest in New Zealand.
The 3000sqm plant stands on a 36-hectare property on the banks of Lake Dunstan in Central Otago and has a head office, bottling facility, warehouse, barrel hall, and a newly completed distillery.
The new facility will allow Scapegrace to produce 160,000 cases of single malt whisky per year and enough gin and vodka to meet its long-term forecasts.
“Throughout our distillery design, there has been no corner cut and no stone unturned to ensure that we are following authentic and traditional methods while also showcasing the very best of our distinct Scapegrace portfolio,” said Daniel McLaughlin, Scapegrace co-founder.
The company also boasts more than 7000 native bushes planted on the site for its biodiversity and carbon offset efforts.
Moreover, the facility will use hydroelectricity to power its boiler instead of diesel, reducing its carbon footprint.
Responding to “overwhelming public demand”, Scapegrace relaunched its Rogue Society Liquor brand last year after a five-year absence from the market.
