Consumers on both sides of the Tasman are about to be able to access a wealth of product information, just by scanning QR codes as they shop.
The Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) and the New Zealand Food & Grocery Council (NZFGC) have teamed up with barcode standards organisation GS1 in Australia and New Zealand to launch SmartFacts, a phone scanning service that provides product information to consumers.
The initiative will provide digital standardised product information, including nutritional details, allergens, and company information to its users, for any consumer who scans the on-pack QR code.
“This is an innovative and practical leap forward. Not just for manufacturers who can now share rich, accurate information in real-time, but for consumers who want fast facts at their fingertips,” said AFGC CEO Colm Maguire.
Using GS1 QR codes will allow consumers to find and understand product information easily, improving their shopping experience and helping them make informed decisions.
“SmartFacts powered by GS1 barcode technology will transform purchasing decisions for shoppers and help them make informed choices with a simple smartphone scan,” said Maria Palazzolo, CEO of GS1 Australia.
“In a time where transparency is key, SmartFacts is set to redefine how Australians interact with
food and grocery products.”
