HelloFresh is transforming its meal kits into a platform where partner brands can connect with consumers at their dinner tables.
Through a series of recipe integration campaigns, the meal-kit business has partnered with brands such as Birch & Waite and McCormick’s Cholula Hot Sauce to showcase their products directly within HelloFresh recipes. The approach enables brands to connect with hundreds of thousands of engaged consumers in a natural, highly contextual setting – while providing customers with new flavours and inspiration for their weekly meals.
“It’s a model that creates genuine value on both sides,” says Andreas Dinkel, CMO and MD of HelloFresh ANZ. “Our culinary team works closely with each brand to design recipes that showcase their product, ensuring it feels like a meaningful part of the meal, not a bolt-on. It gives our partner brands a seat at the dinner table and a unique opportunity for engagement at what is arguably the most intimate time of the day for Australian families. Equally, our customers tell us about their excitement when surprised with something unexpected in their boxes.”
Founded in Australia by former MasterChef contestant Tom Rutledge in 2012, HelloFresh has become a driving force in the food and grocery industry, rapidly expanding its footprint to deliver millions of easily prepared meals annually across five states and both territories. The concept aims to be “more than just a box of food, but the ultimate tool against the universal ‘what’s for dinner?’ stress,” says Dinkel. “We are dedicated to providing an experience where customers can focus on the enjoyment of cooking and spending time with their families, rather than the stress of planning and shopping.”
Expanding into branding partnerships through the recipe integration campaigns seemed like a natural extension.
Turning meal kits into marketing platforms
For Birch & Waite, the collaboration centres on its Green Goddess Dressing, featured across two recipes: The Parmesan Pork Cotoletta and the Cheesy Zucchini Fritters. The full-sized product is also available through HelloFresh’s add-ons menu, extending the experience beyond the dinner table and into the pantry.
Cholula Hot Sauce is another brand taking advantage of the concept, appearing in six recipes across four weeks – including Picante Birria-Style Beef Brisket Tacos and Tejano-Style Prawns with Garlic Rice Bowl – as part of HelloFresh’s Taste of Mexico campaign.
“This kind of integration allows brands to appear within a curated concept series that elevates their product and gives it context,” Dinkel says.
Each campaign is supported by a mix of channels, including printed and digital recipe cards, CRM placements, organic social media posts and flyers in delivery boxes.
A measurable impact on consumer behaviour
While the current campaigns are still in progress, Dinkel says previous recipe integrations have demonstrated significant sales lift and brand awareness gains.
“In one campaign, 65 per cent of customers had never heard of the product before receiving it in their mealkit box, and more than half went on to purchase it afterwards,” he explains. “In another, we saw a 34 per cent increase in the proportion of customers ordering recipes that featured the product compared with previous weeks.”
Every activation includes a tailored post-campaign report for the partner brand detailing customer engagement, recipe ratings, and purchase intent – insights that brands can use to refine their marketing and product strategies.
Creating stickier customer relationships
Beyond the marketing value for brands, Dinkel says the collaborations also enhance HelloFresh’s own offering.
“These partnerships help bring variety and excitement to our customers. They get to try new products and flavours, which keeps them engaged and coming back for more.”
That dovetails well into the company’s strategy of having a dedicated team of in-house chefs ensuring a constant rotation of more than 150 meal options on each week’s menu. “We introduce customers to exciting new flavours and cuisines they might not otherwise try, making dinner a moment of discovery and inspiration instead of a chore,” explains Dinkel.
HelloFresh offers a range of flexible boxes and meal plans, allowing customers to easily tailor their order each week, with options for households of up to six people.
Looking ahead, the company plans to expand its collaboration model across its broader portfolio, including Youfoodz, EveryPlate and HelloFresh New Zealand.
Dinkel believes that brand partnerships are a great example of innovation in the grocery industry.
“Our goal is to keep finding ways to connect brands and consumers in meaningful, measurable and delicious ways, whether that be through recipe integrations or sampling campaigns,” he says. The company is also exploring ways to integrate non-food brands into the program.
