Why brands like Potato Utopia are going bigger for Costco

Potato Utopia, a label that typically sells gratins in packs of four, is now offering larger servings and bulk-buy value at Costco Australia.

The brand has supersized its 100g signature gratins into an exclusive 1.2kg Four Cheese Gratin Value Pack, featuring 10 individually portioned 120g gratins for $17.99. Each serving is considered 20 per cent bigger than the existing Woolworths format.

The company explains that’s how you make something feel ‘Costco’: Size and scale.

The move is more than simply stuffing more gratins in a box; it’s a response to how Australian households stretch their budgets without sacrificing quality amid cost-of-living pressures. Potato Utopia has increased the size of each unit to create what it describes as “the market’s biggest gratin”, giving shoppers a more “freezer-friendly” option to stock up on reliable staples for weeknight dinners and make fewer supermarket trips.

Therefore, for brands such as Potato Utopia, Costco is an opportunity to meet new customers already accustomed to buying in bulk and flooding social media with Costco hauls and their best finds.

Potato Utopia says its Costco-exclusive box was designed specifically for the Australian market and now forms part of the brand’s longer-term growth strategy, primarily based on its internal data showing boxed formats can drive sales 30 per cent higher than bags.

Building on its existing customer loyalty, with a repeat purchase rate around 80 per cent above the category average for potato products, the brand aims to turn its everyday freezer staple into an even more convenient meal solution with its Costco launch.
