Tassal extends supermarket salmon supply

Salmon specialist, Tassal, has extended its current salmon supply agreement with Woolworths and will also supply fresh salmon to discount supermarket chain, Aldi.

From October 1, 2015, Tassal’s current agreement with Woolworths to supply salmon to Queensland, NSW, and Western Australia will run for a further three years.

The new agreement will see Tassal supply fresh salmon directly to Woolworths through De Costi Seafoods for Queensland and NSW.

Tassal will also supply fresh salmon to Aldi through De Costi Seafoods in Queensland and NSW.The agreement applies to a 12 month period from October 1, 2015 and will replace an imported salmon supply.

“We are delighted that both Woolworths and Aldi have both put in place these agreements from 1 October 2015,” said Tassal MD and CEO Mark Ryan.

“These agreements further show how Tassal and De Costi Seafoods can successfully work together in providing improved supply to Australian retailers. Our strategy focused on growing domestic market per capita consumption will continue to underpin growing demand for salmon in Australia.”

Tassal struck a deal to buy De Costi Seafoods earlier this month and at the time Ryan described the move as a compelling strategic acquisition.

“De Costi provides Tassal with an attractive vehicle to deliver the company’s salmon and seafood growth strategy, which is about maximising domestic market per capita consumption of seafood. The seafood market in Australia is assessed at $4.3 billion per capita,” Ryan said.

“This acquisition would allow us to build on Tassal’s successful domestic market focus with salmon, increase Tassal’s vertical integration in salmon, and further drive scale, and the efficiencies and benefits that will flow from the increased scale that the seafood offering will bring.”
