After partnering with the supply chain standards organisation GS1 in October 2016, Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba has formalised the alliance by signing a memorandum of understanding with GS1 Australia.
The agreement was signed by Maggie Zhou, Alibaba Group’s managing director of Australia and New Zealand, and Russell Stucki, chairman of GS1 Australia at an event in Melbourne yesterday.
The move is intended to give Australian business selling through Alibaba’s e-commerce platforms a framework to adopt GS1’s global standards for product information management and its barcode, or Global Trade Item Number (GTIN).
The adoption of GS1 standards is seen as an important way for supply chain stakeholders, especially consumers, to recognise safe and authentic products, a key selling point for many Australian brands on the Alibaba platforms.
“We are excited to enter into this agreement with GS1 Australia and support local businesses entering the Chinese market through Alibaba’s platforms,” said Alibaba Group’s Maggie Zhou.
“The demand for Australian products on Alibaba Group’s platforms continues to grow and Chinese consumers recognise the importance of safe and authentic products.”
As a global non-profit organisation, GS1 also presents an opportunity for Alibaba to connect with millions of member businesses around the world, Stucki said.
“The MoU signed here today will formalise the strategic partnership to support the growth and introduction of Australian brands using GS1 standards to the millions of online shoppers using Alibaba Group’s platforms in China.
“The alliance with GS1 Global Office will also foster great opportunities for Alibaba to connect with over two million member businesses worldwide.”
