Independents gaining ground in whisky market

Independent and online whisky retailers are gaining momentum in the market, with Australian consumers seeking exclusive selections and lower prices.

The Whisky List reported a major trend of online consumers purchasing whisky at independent retailers as opposed to supermarkets

It’s Indies vs Chains 2019 Report shows independent retailers beat supermarkets on product exclusivity, access to new products and price.

Supermarket chains claimed 73 per cent of all alcohol sales in FY18/19 in Australia, but online independent retailers are expanding significantly.

“Their dominance in the whisky niche specifically is arguably due to the points of difference they offer as compared to chains. Indies (as an aggregate) stock a more diverse range from both overseas and Australian whisky producers with both exclusivity deals and access to more new releases from the brands, all whilst remaining highly competitive on price,” reported The Whisky List.

There diverse range of Scotch, Japanese, Australian and American Whiskies available for online consumers is unmatched by supermarket chains.

The Whisky List users voted 85 per cent in favour of “prefer purchasing from an online independent bottle shop vs supermarket chain”.
