Magic Valley launches cultivated pork after lamb debut

Melbourne-based agrifood startup Magic Valley has launched a cultivated pork product made from pig skin cells.

The latest release follows the launch of a cultivated lamb product last year. Both meats are completely free of slaughter or any inhumane treatment of animals in the production process.

The product is derived from living pig skin cells and then cultivated into stem cells using a mixture of amino acids and other nutrients used for cell growth.

Magic Valley’s founder and CEO, Paul Bevan (pictured above), said cultivated meat products are an “ethical and sustainable solution”. He says they are also cheaper than traditional meats to produce, although scientists might contest that claim – for now, anyway.

“The global need for alternative proteins to meet the demands of the growing population is imperative as we take that journey to achieve net zero, steering clear of traditional ways of consuming meat for ethical and environmental reasons.”

The cultivated pork products offer the exact same flavours that consumers enjoy from traditionally farmed pork.

The brand is also set to expand into cultivated beef next year and is looking to use its technologies to get more alt-meat substitutes into the market.
