The Australian jackfruit industry is set to expand following a $1 million injection to help it ramp up production to meet growing domestic demand.
Australian statutory corporation AgriFutures Australia has invested $1 million in developing a ready-to-market jackfruit product.
Jackfruit has been identified as a “priority” for investment by the Australian Emerging Topical Fruits Strategic RD&E Plan.
AgriFutures Emerging Industries senior manager, Dr Olivia Reynolds, said the “expansion of plantings” in Australia is due to “strong market demand”.
The project will work with growers, processors and retailers to build a supply chain while developing three processed jackfruit products to increase planting capacity or divert excess fruit.
AgriFutures Australia has provided to The Northern Territory Government’s Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade to lead the project along with the University of Melbourne.
