The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) have announced the winners of the annual Sustainable Seafood Awards at the launch of the Super Seafood campaign.
Coles was voted the MSC’s Best Sustainable Seafood Supermarket, while Aldi received the ASC’s Best Responsible Seafood Retailer award.
The MSC Best Sustainable Seafood Product – Shelf Award was given to John West Salmon Bowls. I&J was voted the ASC’s Best Responsible Seafood Brand, while Birds’ Eye Frozen Steam Fresh Fillets received the ASC’s Best Responsible Seafood Product award.
Heather Brayford, director general of the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, received a special Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to sustainable fisheries management in Western Australia throughout her 35-year career.
“Super Seafood is certified to the world’s best seafood standards for people and the planet. The commitment of brands and retailers to source and sell ASC and MSC certified seafood sends a clear signal down the supply chain and incentivises sustainable fishing and responsible aquaculture practices,” said Anne Gabriel, MSC program director and Duncan Leadbitter, ASC commercial manager.
The Sustainable Seafood Awards Australia are judged independently and recognise organisations and individuals who have made important contributions to ensuring the future of fish through their participation in the ASC and MSC programs.
