Mountain Blue launches plastic-free packaging trial

Blueberries provider Mountain Blue has collaborated with Opal Partner to produce a plastic-free packaging trial for the Eureka brand and supermarket chain Coles Group.

Over two months, 34 Coles supermarkets in northern NSW began offering kerbside recyclable and FSC-certified cardboard punnets for blueberries. The punnets, an alternative to plastic containers, are made of recycled paper and include a transparent screen made of wood pulp that allows customers to see the blueberries inside.

The Eureka punnets will be available throughout northern NSW this month.

“Fresh produce packaging is ripe for innovation, and we’re excited to provide our customers with a plastic-free alternative for much-loved and in-season blueberries,” said Brooke Donnelly, Coles’ GM of sustainability.

“This trial is about ensuring the new cardboard punnets keep blueberries as fresh and tasty as the conventional plastic packaging and to see how our customers respond to the change.”

The packaging emphasises Moutain Blue’s commitment to sustainability by ensuring that the materials are sourced from carefully managed forests.
