Australians are spending $209 per week on groceries for their households in August, up from $190 last year, according to Finder’s Consumer Sentiment Tracker.

The company found that parents spent significantly more on their households, around $264, as compared to those without children, who spent $183 per week on groceries.

Meanwhile, Finder revealed its Customer Satisfaction Awards, with Harris Farm winning four of the eight categories, including ‘Most Loved’, ‘Most Recommended’, ‘Most Trusted’, and ‘Top Rated Supermarket Produce’.

Aldi won the ‘Top Value’ award for the second year in a row, with Woolworths winning the ‘Top Rated Supermarket Rewards Program’ as the only supermarket that awards Qantas points.

Coles won in the ‘Top Rated Grocery Delivery’ category for its home convenience services.

“At a time when every dollar counts, these retailers are making a big difference to households,” said Graham Cooke, head of consumer research at Finder.

Finder recommended planning meals and making ingredient lists to avoid overspending at supermarkets.

The company said using unit pricing, the cost per unit of measurement, to compare prices would allow consumers to find the best value for their money.

Finder also recommended buying frozen foods in bulk, such as frozen fruits and vegetables, which is often cheaper and would ensure consumers are not missing out on nutrient-rich foods.
