The Cape Grim Water Company has entered administration, nearly 30 years after the business was first launched.
The company has appointed Jason Tang and Ozem Kassem from KPT Restructuring as administrators.
Founded in 1998, Cape Grim Water bottles rainwater from Tasmania’s northwest and markets its product as the “world’s cleanest water”.
The company positioned the water as a premium product aimed at high-end hospitality and export markets, promoting a unique harvesting process that captured rainwater before it touched the ground.
According to The Daily Telegraph, the brand once secured supply partnerships with Qantas. It also launched the Cape Grim 666 Vodka in 2008, which used rainwater sourced from the same region.
Qantas discontinued its contract in 2005, leaving the water company with a consignment of unsellable stock, which saw then director Doug Halley attempt to sell cheaply to friends, media reports at the time showed.
The original Cape Grim Water Company ceased trading in early 2021, while its water bottling operations went into liquidation in July 2024. Aqua Sano remained the primary distributor for Cape Grim Water across all mainland Australian states and territories.
In an update last October, Aqua Sano said Cape Grim Water was not likely to reopen.
“We apologise for the inconvenience but look forward to supplying you with their magnificent water again in the future,” the notice reads.
The first creditors’ meeting will take place on January 19, during which the attendees will vote to determine whether to appoint a committee of inspection.
