Lactalis Australia will close its South Brisbane facility, bringing to an end nearly nine decades of dairy production at the site.

The Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) says the company plans to close the operation on July 10, a move expected to affect up to 202 direct employees, as well as contractors working at the plant.

“We are meeting with our members who are understandably very concerned about their futures, and our top priority is offering support to them and their families,” said AWU Queensland state secretary Stacey Schinnerl.

“We are very disappointed at this announcement and will be working closely with management to ensure our members are looked after as much as possible.”

The South Brisbane facility has played a significant role in Australia’s dairy history, including producing the country’s first square milk bottles and pioneering UHT long-life milk.

The AWU described the closure as a major loss, not only for employees but also for a site with longstanding historical importance.

The union said it will continue discussions with Lactalis Australia to gain a clearer understanding of the decision and its consequences, while providing ongoing support to affected workers throughout the transition.
