Costa Group’s general manager Peter McPherson was elected on Monday as president of the newly-formed Berries Australia Limited.
Australia’s berry groups have joined forces to represent a stronger voice in the industry. The new group includes Australian Blueberry Growers’ Association, Raspberries and Blackberries Australia, and Strawberries Australia.
The organisation will involve about 700+ growers across Australia. It includes horticultural enterprises, agribusinesses, local cooperatives and independent farms. Berries Australia said the total annual output of the 109,000 tonnes of berries has a gross return of A$1.05 billion farmgate price in the country.
McPherson said in a statement that Berries Australia plans to expand both domestic and global markets for Australian berries; innovate and develop growers’ skills; have sustainable farming practices; have ethical sourcing and engagement of labour and provide a safe working environment.
Berries are grown in all states with the exception of Northern Territory. Berries Australia members supply supermarket chains, retailers, food service and restaurants.
