Eggs recalled from Coles and Woolies over salmonella fears

Eggs recallAustralian company Bridgewater Poultry on Thursday recalled its 12 egg cartons from Woolworths and independent stores in NSW, VIC, TAS, ACT and Coles in VIC and SA.

NSW Food Authority said the eggs were recalled due to salmonella contamination, which can cause illness if consumed.

Egg Farmers of Australia moved to reassure consumers on Friday with spokesman John Coward saying that it’s a common occurrence for salmonella to appear sometimes in eggs since the warm-blooded animals can carry the bacteria in their intestines.

“If varying strains of salmonella are present, in this case we have quite a nasty one, then the chance of it getting through a very small percentage and contaminating some eggs is there and that’s what happened. We are seeing an isolated outbreak. But there was an outbreak in NSW late last year,” he said on ABC radio on Friday.

An investigation is underway to find out if there’s a link between the Victorian and NSW outbreaks. Quarantine measures are implemented at the Bridgewater farm where thousands of infected hens are expected to be destroyed.

Consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice and return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund.
