Nestlé dishes up plant-based bacon cheeseburger

Nestlé has created vegan alternatives to cheese and bacon to complete a plant-based ‘bacon cheeseburger’.

The ‘PB Triple Play’ will first cater to restaurants and foodservice operators and extended to food professionals in 2020.

“More and more consumers are looking for delicious, nutritious and sustainable plant-based options when they dine out. We have now raised the bar by developing a ‘PB Triple Play’ of ingredients for an all-time classic: the bacon cheeseburger. We’re continuing to make good on our promise to offer consumers food that is right for them and right for the planet,”
Nestlé CEO Mark Schneider said.

The PB Triple Play’s vegan cheddar cheese is described by Nestlé as having the “texture, meltability and delicious, rich taste of a dairy cheese” while the vegan bacon is said to be “crispy and chewy” like a real meat. Nestlé even created a variety of vegan burger sauces to accompany the burger.

The FMCG giant said that the new plant-based ‘bacon cheeseburger’ contains lower fat and saturated fat; no cholesterol and is higher in fibre compared to a standard bacon cheeseburger. It also has a lower carbon footprint.

Nestlé recently pledged to achieving zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, with plant-based food and beverages as part of that plan. The Sweet Earth Awesome Burger has already been released in the US and the Garden Gourmet Incredible Burger has been released in Europe for retail and foodservices.
