Countdown opens first Metro store in Auckland

Woolworths’ NZ supermarket Countdown has opened its first Metro small format store in Auckland’s CBD.

Alongside fresh food and groceries including breakfast, lunch and dinner takeout options, the grocery offers barista-made coffee, fresh sandwiches, deli salads, hot food, meal kits, catering options and kombucha on tap.

The new Metro, standing at about 600 square metres, is located in a busy part of the CBD close to a number of apartment complexes and transport hubs. It stocks about 5000 products, compared to around 25,000 products at an average Countdown supermarket.

“We’ve noticed a real shift in how our CBD customers are shopping and we’ve kept this at the forefront of our design and range,” Natalie Davis, Countdown managing director said.

Countdown research found that 65 per cent of city centre customers buy hot meals for lunch while 61 per cent want coffee to go and 74 per cent want snack food. They also want to have access to dinner options on the commute home from work.
