Supermarket IGA has launched its Emergency Response Plan and is raising A$280,000 to help Australians devastated by the bushfires. The donations from retailer outlets are matched by its parent company, Metcash.
The Supermarket operator also donated A$355,000 worth of water, products and gift cards, including the supermarket’s Rapid Response fund, worth A$600,000. The grocery also launched a Bushfire Appeal in-store for customers wherein they can buy a A$2 token with proceeds going to bushfire victims.
“At IGA, we are devastated by the current bushfire crisis, and want to send our thoughts to those stores whose local communities have been affected. It is our understanding that no stores have been directly affected by the line of fire, although each retailer is doing everything they can for firefighters and the local community to help out from free CommunityCo water to longer trading hours and fundraising efforts,” said Joseph Romeo, chairman of the IGA National Retailers Council.
Romeo said the Bushfire Appeal will allow them to utilise its 1400 retailer network to help organise a mass fundraising efforts for the Vinnies Bushfire Appeal. Their goal is to raise A$1 million through the launch of tokens so they are urging customers to purchase the A$2 token when they shop at IGA.
100 per cent of the proceeds will go directly to Vinnies Bushfire Appeal. Shoppers can purchase the tokens from their local IGA stores in NSW starting yesterday and in other states on 13 January. For other states, IGA said consumers can donate in-store in the meantime.
