Convenience retailer 7-Eleven has organised a free public pop-up carnival called Fair Ground over the weekend in Melbourne.

The multi-sensory event – which marks the launch of fairtrade coffee through its stores – will feature a 15-metre-high Ferris wheel, carnival games, stilt walkers, entertainment and complimentary freshly ground coffee and snacks.

Julie Laycock, 7-Eleven’s GM of customer & insights, said it’s important now more than ever to know where your coffee comes from since “customers are seeking more responsibly sourced and sustainable coffee.”

“The 80 million cups of coffee that 7-Eleven serve each year will now be 100 per cent Fairtrade certified. This means a more sustainable future for coffee farmers, their communities and our customers.”

Fairtrade CEO, Mike Briers, said the retailer has become the regulator’s largest Fairtrade-certified partner in Australia. He added every coffee purchase will now help fund initiatives that benefit coffee farmers.

The retailer has unveiled new sustainable coffee packaging made with plants this week. It can be used for hot coffee, Slurpees, smoothies & frappes. The lids are made from bamboo and sugarcane pulp while the straws are made from paper.

Customers can also enjoy a 50-cent discount when they bring their own reusable coffee cups in-store.
