Opal and JBS Australia win global award for sustainable packaging

Renewable packaging business Opal along with meat and food processor JBS Australia have won a WorldStar global packaging award in the transit category.

The company collaborated on an innovative cardboard dunnage solution which is a column-like corrugated structure designed to limit product movement during transportation, thus preventing food waste.

A typical dunnage is usually made from expanded polystyrene (EPS) that cannot be recycled and ends up in a landfill. However, Opal’s corrugated cardboard structure is 100 per cent recyclable.

Sam Churchill, group manager of sustainability for JBS Australia, said Opal’s dunnage solution aligns with the company’s sustainability commitment to reduce its packaging footprint.

“This innovative product has resulted in tangible cost savings and operational efficiencies. By reducing our packaging footprint we are meeting our sustainability objectives for the benefit of our business and customers, and providing positive environmental outcomes.”

Brad Hinds, group GM of Opal Fibre Packaging, said that by collaborating with customers, the company can design and produce products that can deliver on functionality, supply chain efficiency and sustainability.”
