Aquaculture company Tassal has received the Aquaculture Stewardship Council Above and Beyond award and the Young Person in Aquaculture award at this year’s Sustainable Seafood Week.
The Above and Beyond Award demonstrates the company’s innovation projects launched in the last 12 months and its commitment to reducing environmental impacts.
The company’s green initiatives include the transition to moisture-locking trays and recyclable fibreboard cartons.
“Using cardboard within the seafood supply chain has its challenges, such as overcoming the packaging being compromised by our products (prawn feelers) and a wet environment,” Tassal chief commercial and risk officer Matt Vince said.
“Reducing our waste impact is a key priority for our business and we’re really committed to reducing the amount of polystyrene packaging used in this sector and replacing it with more recyclable packaging and supporting Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation’s (APCO) sustainable packaging goals.”
Meanwhile, the Young Person in Aquaculture award was given to Blake Newell, operations team leader at Tassal.
