Coles has teamed up with food rescue organisation SecondBite to raise $1.5 million for its Winter Appeal campaign.
In the past year, the retailer has donated more than 17.7 million kg of unsold, edible food diverted from landfill – equivalent to 35 million meals.
SecondBite acting CEO, Lucy Coward, said the funds raised will help SecondBite provide an equivalent of 7.5 million meals to vulnerable Australians.
“It’s been another amazing effort from Coles shoppers despite the tough economic conditions. This shows how strongly Australians feel about supporting one another.”
Coles Group GM of corporate and indigenous affairs, Sally Fielke, thanked customers for their support and said the money raised this year will help local communities and reduce waste by helping SecondBite collect unsold edible food.
Customers can also help by purchasing specially marked products from the chilled meals aisle. Coles will also donate a portion of sales from products such as the Coles Kitchen 300g soups or the Chicken Pesto Bake to SecondBite until September 3.
Last week, Woolworths Group boosted funding to help its hunger relief partners to deliver 13 million additional meals.
