In an Australian seafood industry first, OceanWatch Australia has launched a QR code system in an effort to enhance traceability.
The codes, part of the OceanWatch Master Fisherman Program which sets protocols for everyday fishing practices, were launched at Sydney Fish Market on World Fisheries Day on November 21.
The codes aim to give wholesale buyers and their customers a complete picture of where and how the catch was caught and the face behind the fishing.
The QR codes also reveals information about the characteristics of the species, migration patterns and population statistics.
The project is supported by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation on behalf of the Australian Government.
